The Department for Business and Trade and the ERC co-hosted an event at The Shard on 16th November to showcase new findings and analysis of the Longitudinal Small Business Survey.

The event began with an overview of the key findings from the 2022 survey, followed by some headlines from the latest panel report which reports data from firms interviewed in 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022. This of course was a particularly eventful period, going from before, then through, the Covid-19 pandemic and beyond. ERC’s Stephen Roper outlined some key trends in the data in terms of growth-related behaviours in SMEs. These include falls in the proportion of SMEs engaging in innovation and exporting activities, accessing finance and using business support.

The analytical papers presented focused on a range of themes, including the impact of Brexit on digital adoption in SMEs, and on internationalisation, innovation and turnover; the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on SME performance, and the role of innovation and firm networks in organisational resilience; the effects of social and environmental orientation in businesses on innovation, exporting and growth; and the demand for external finance by environmentally-motivated SMEs.

All papers contain useful evidence and insight that will be of interest to policymakers and practitioners supporting SMEs during what have been, and continue to be challenging times.

All papers are available on the ERC website via the publications page here
