On 22nd February 2024 we held an ERC Research Showcase event at Aston University’s Enterprise Hub at John Cadbury House. As usual we had a varied agenda, with the ERC team reporting on a selection of the research projects recently published and currently in progress. We covered a range of themes:

Mark Hart gave an overview of his work with Karen Bonner on ‘productivity heroes’ – which involves the identification of a new category of small businesses which could bring real insights for policymakers. Download the Insight here

Eugenie Golubova presented her work with Jun Du and Stephen Roper on how firms make export decisions, with new insights from a literature review and survey of 1,750 firms.

Anastasia Ri shared her work with Effie Kesidou and Stephen Roper on digital adoption, net zero and productivity being carried out in partnership with the European Investment Bank and funded by the Productivity Institute.

Kevin Mole presented his work for the National Innovation Centre for Rural Enterprise on rural firms and environmental action.

Maria Wishart outlined some of the latest findings from our workplace mental health and productivity research funded by the Economic and Social Research Council which involves comparisons between employer attitudes and practices in England, Ireland and Sweden.

Vicki Belt gave an overview of the ERC’s latest State of Small Business Britain Report and evidence-based manifesto for small business growth and productivity. If you’ve not seen this yet, you can access the report here

ERC Director Stephen Roper finished the event by giving an outline of some of the exciting work we have lined up for 2024, including more research on a range of topical themes including exporting, investment, mental health, innovation, digital adoption and net zero.
